The Battle of Britain National Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne is dedicated to Churchill’s famous “Few” who fought in the skies overhead to keep this country free from invasion. ‘The Wing’ Visitor Centre, is an eye-catching design in the shape of a Spitfire wing, complete with dihedral angle to provide educational and visitor facilities. The Wing is not a museum but an experience, using high-tech effects, video walls and other special techniques, carefully designed to immerse visitors in the experiences of those who fought during the Battle of Britain.
As well as the visitor experience, the Wing includes a learning area to help fulfil the task of educating youngsters. A central ‘cockpit’ area with an open balcony offers superb views across the Channel to France, from where the Luftwaffe would have appeared in 1940.
